MAUSTON – population 3,740
It is believed that the first white man to settle in Mauston was Peter Baupre, a fur trader. The native Menomonie and Ho-Chunk peoples had occupied the area until that time. A dam and sawmill was built on the Lemonweir River in 1842. The first owner was Joseph Hewett. When he died, Milton Maughs took possession of the dam and plotted out a village. He dropped the ‘ghs’ from his name and the tiny village came to be known as Mauston. The Village of Mauston was charted in 1860.  In 1864, Mauston became the county seat. Mauston has the largest population of all cities, towns and villages in Juneau County.

As the county seat, Mauston is very actively involved in community cooperation with businesses and residents alike. Five of its many businesses are members of the Fortune 500. The Lemonweir River glides through town and provides a beautiful setting at Riverside Park.  A Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday morning June through October, and numerous craft and antique shops are available for the adventurous shopper.Riding at Red Ridge Ranch
