Hunting in Juneau County has been a tradition that spans many generations. The area is world famous for its variety of game animals and the success rate of most of our hunters. Add to that the great scenery, the warm and friendly people that help make the hunt a success and Juneau County ranks near the top for hunting destinations in the upper Midwest.
Have a favorite to hunt? How about the whitetail that roams the entire county? Whether you’re hunting in the lowlands and sand country of northern Juneau County or testing your legs in the hills and valleys of the south, we offer some of the best deer hunting in the world. Big, fat and wary bucks are plentiful and many are taken each year that approach record book status. Traditional gun hunting is still the primary way to take your trophy but we offer bow hunting and black powder for those enthusiasts.
Since the reintroduction of wild turkey in Wisconsin, Juneau County has become a hotspot for both the spring and fall turkey hunts. Huge toms with long beards and spikes have been taken every year and the turkey population is healthy and growing thanks to our wonderful habitat.
If small game is your thing, there’s more than enough squirrels and rabbits to test your marksmanship. There’s something about sitting in the woods on a crisp fall morning and listening to a fox squirrel rustle through the oak leaves that soothes the soul. Just so you don’t fall asleep, the reds are squawking at you for invading their territory but staying just out of range.
Thanks to an aggressive stocking program by local conservation clubs, Juneau County has a growing pheasant population. There’s been plenty of sign that the released birds are reproducing naturally at a healthy rate and that’s good news for us hunters. The thousands of acres of corn and soybeans grown in the county give them plenty of cover so the hunting is challenging. Pheasants aren’t the only upland game bird available in Juneau County. There’s plenty of ruffed grouse around but you’ve got to be willing to tackle the thickets and lush undergrowth they love. The annual migration of woodcock brings the excitement of trying to hit one of those pocket rockets while standing on one leg with your coat caught on a wild blueberry branch.
If lying on your back in an old skiff in freezing weather with a wet smelly dog is your thing, Juneau County’s got you covered. Many species of duck and geese find the marshes, lakes, rivers and fields of Juneau County irresistible as they make their annual migration from the north to the warmer southern states. Shooting from blinds, pot hole shooting, and jump shooting stir the juices of us water fowlers and there’s a lot of us who speak fluent “duck.”

Did we miss anything? Every season! Seriously, we really want you to come and visit us during the hunting seasons. There’s plenty of places for you to stay, many campgrounds are open to serve you, our restaurants specialize in good, honest food and the people you’ll meet are friendly and more than willing to help make your hunt a success. Come and visit us, we’re really worth a closer look.
By the way, be sure to click on the map of public hunting lands here in Juneau County. It's as accurate as we can make it but be sure to check with the Juneau County Forestry and Parks Department (608-847-9390) and other agencies if you have questions. Finally, remember to ask the owner to hunt and respect the land; there's not a lot of new land being made today.
